Last night, Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order that continues to ban local governments from issuing a mask mandate.
The legislature gave the Governor broad emergency powers but his actions must still be for the purpose of protecting the lives of Georgians. The Governor’s lawsuit against Atlanta’s Mayor and City Council does the opposite of that — it puts more Georgians directly in harm’s way, all to score a few political points.
The Georgia Constitution doesn’t give the Governor the power to stop cities from acting to save lives and protect public health. Common sense and the Georgia Constitution are perfectly aligned here. The Governor’s decision not to act doesn’t magically paralyze the power of local governments to protect public health.
